On Wednesday at Champions Golf Club, nine women punched their ticketsto the U.S. Women’s Amateur on Aug. 5-11 at the Country Club of Charleston.
Angleton’s Lakareber Abe shot a 1-over-par 72 to take medalist honors on the vaunted Cypress Creek Course that played host to the 1969 U.S. Open and 1967 Ryder Cup Matches. The incoming freshman at the University of Alabama carded two birdies against three bogeys to hold off Gabriela Lopez of Mexico City, Emily Collins from Colleyville and Kalynd Carson from The Woodlands, all who finished a shot back at 2-over.
Five others also qualified for the U.S. Women’s Amateur by surviving a playoff at 3-over 74. Those qualifiers included Alex Rossi from Austin, Chelsea Mocio from Fort Worth, Talia Campbell from Dallas, Abby Newton from Katy and Katelyn Sepmoree from Austin.
Regina Plasenica from Guadalajara, Mexico, and Plano’s Kaci McCartan finished as alternates for the USGA national championship.
