Dallas native Scheffler leads AJGA's HP Boys by Two Shots

on 17 February 2013.

After the first round of the HP Boys Championship at Carlton Woods Saturday, Scott Scheffler of Dallas carded five birdies on his way to a 4-under-par 68. Looking to take home his first AJGA victory, Scheffler has a 2-shot lead over Brad Dalke of McKinney, Texas going into Sunday's second round.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the HP Boys Championship at Carlton Woods is a 54-hole stroke play competition played on the par-72, 7,311-yard Fazio Championship Course at The Club at Carlton Woods. The 72-player field features players from 22 states, India, Japan, Mexico, South Africa, South Korea, and Zimbabwe. The field includes 17 of the top 20 boys in the Polo Golf Rankings and 34 Rolex Junior All-Americans.

In sole position of the lead following the first round of play, Scheffler finds himself in a familiar position. At the 2012 HP Boys Championship at Carlton Woods, Scheffler shot an opening round 6-under-par 66, but after a second-round 77 and a third-round 80, he finished tied for 24th. Heading into the tournament this week, Scheffler looked to keep his play consistent through all three rounds.

"I hit my irons well and stayed in play. I didn't feel well before the round, but I figured it out," said Scheffler, who is No. 8 in the Polo Golf Rankings.

A high school junior, Scheffler was named a second-team Rolex Junior All-American in 2012, and advanced to the championship match at the 2012 Polo Golf Junior Classic.

"I'm off to a good start," Scheffler said. "And I just want to keep it up.”

In a three-way tie for third is Rigel Fernandes of Bradenton, Fla., Gordon Neale of Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., and Cameron Champ of Sacramento, Calif., at 1-under-par 71.

The second round begins Saturday at 8 a.m.
