Rory McIlroy Commits to Shell Houston Open

on 06 February 2013.

World No. 1 Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland has now officially committed to play in the Shell Houston Open and his star power will also result in extra funds for one of the event’s longtime benefiting charities.

“A commitment from the No. 1 player in the world, especially one who is going to help us raise money for a tournament charity, is very special for our event,” said Steve Timms, SHO Tournament Director and President/CEO of Houston Golf Association.

McIlroy is the third player currently in the Top 10 of the World Golf Rankings committed to tee it up the week of March 25-31 at Redstone Golf Club – Tournament Course. Louis Oosthuizen of South Africa (No. 5) and Lee Westwood of England (No. 8) join a list of early committing world class players which also includes Nicolas Colsaerts (No. 39) of Belgium, the 2012 European Tour driving distance leader. All have dual memberships on the PGA TOUR and European Tour.

Named the PGA TOUR player of the year in December, McIlroy led the 2012 earnings list on both the PGA TOUR and European Tour. He has won six times on American soil, and counts two major championships – the 2011 U.S. Open and 2012 PGA Championship – among those victories. McIlroy also has four international wins as a professional.

The third appearance at the Shell Houston Open by the 23-year-old Irish sensation indeed has special meaning to the Houston Golf Association. Through the 6 Bags Project unveiled last month by his foundation, McIlroy will help generate funds for Chinquapin Prep, a Shell Houston Open beneficiary since 1979. During tournament week McIlroy will use a staff golf bag emblazoned with the Chinquapin Prep logo. The unique bag will be auctioned through www.roryfoundation.com with all funds raised going to Chinquapin Prep.

"It’s great to have Chinquapin School as one of organizations benefiting from The 6 Bags Project,” said McIlroy. “The work that the staff and teachers put into each student is to be commended and hopefully being part of this project will not only raise money for the school to continue its great work but also heighten awareness on a local and national level."

Chinquapin Prep primarily serves economically disadvantaged youth from the Houston area. Located in Highlands, TX the campus has classes for boys in grades 7-12, who live on campus Monday through Friday, while the girls and 6th grade boys are transported back to their homes daily. In 1995 it was recognized as the PGA TOUR Charity of the Year.

The 6 tournaments that are to benefit in 2013 are listed below with the respective charity beneficiary. The exception is The Masters where the charity has been decided upon but is scheduled to be announced at a later date.
