Final Match Set at TGA's Mid-Am Match Play

on 29 July 2012.

Plano—In what has turned out to be a battle of fitness and golf, Brandon Scott and Lucas Boyd advanced to the finals Saturday at the Texas Golf Association’s Mid-Amateur Match Play Championship. The two battled through a second consecutive day of triple-digit temperatures to survive two matches apiece.

Boyd took on Mike Booker in the first semifinal match of the afternoon. Boyd quickly won the second and fourth holes, while Booker won the third to give Boyd an early 1-up lead. Boyd then made birdie on the seventh and eagle on the eighth to take a commanding 3-up lead.

Boyd cruised from there and won 6 and 5.

In the second semifinal match, Scott faced Christopher Wheeler. Wheeler made birdies on the first and fourth holes to take an early 2-up lead. He was 1 up lead at the turn.

On the back nine, Scott went on a run. He won the 11th, 12th, and 13th holes to take a 2-up lead.  Wheeler bounced back with a birdie on the 14th to trim the lead. Scott was able to hang onto his lead and close out the match with a par on the 17th hole for a 2-and-1 victory.

Both Boyd and Scott will be looking to win their first state championship on Sunday.
