Frisco's Courtney Dow wins State Junior title

on 27 July 2012.

HORSESHOE BAY—Courtney Dow from Frisco won the Girls 15-18 division of the 85th Texas State Junior Championship presented by Merrill Lynch. The 14-year-old’s final-round 71 allowed her to finish two shots clear of Julia Beck, Maddie McCrary and Alisa Chong.

Conducted by the Legends Junior Tour since 2005, the Texas State Junior Championship presented by Merrill Lynch is one of the oldest and largest state junior competitions in the country. With 264 players competing, the tournament stretches over five days on two different courses.

Dow, who won the Girls 14 & Under Texas State Junior Championship two years ago, played consistent golf in the final round, which led to easier pars.

“Today my round was much different,” Dow said. “The previous two days, I was a little more wild, making 5 birdies and some other mixed in scores each round. Today, I only had two birdies and one bogey, so it made for an easier and steadier round.”

Heading into the 18th hole, Dow thought she was tied with McCrary and needed a birdie to win. McCrary flew her shot over the green and left herself a five-footer for par. Dow gave herself a 19-foot putt for birdie with her second shot. It didn’t go in, but her tap in par sealed the victory.

“I thought we were tied going into the last hole and I needed a birdie,” she said. “When I missed the putt and made my par putt, I thought I was headed for a playoff. I looked at the scoreboard and saw my picture up as the Champion and that’s when I realized I had won.”

Beck had six birdies in a row on her back nine and shot a final-round 71 to finish in a tie for second place. McCrary and Chong finished tied with Beck, two shots behind Dow. Taylor Chaffin’s 3-under-par 69 was the low round of the tournament. It propelled her into fifth place, one shot out of a tie for second place.
