Newcomer Caleb Wins TGA North Mid-Am Title

on 26 March 2012.

THE COLONY—Texas newcomer Mike Calef won the Texas Golf Association North Region Mid-Am at the Old American Golf Club with an even-par final round. After moving to Texas from Boston a few months ago, Calef won the TGA title with a 54-hole score of 3-under-par 210.

With three days of cloudless skies and calm winds, weather was perfect for the championship. Old American did an amazing job in getting the course playable after a week of pouring rain. Calef has only played in two TGA championships, and added this victory to a runner-up finish in the North Four-Ball earlier this year. He had a four-shot lead entering the final round. When no one made a charge, he cruised to victory and was the only player under par for the tournament.

Brandon Scott fired a final round 1-under par 70 to finish alone in second place at 1-over 214. It was Scott’s second consecutive runner-up finish in this championship.  Colby Harwell had a consistent week with rounds of 70-72-73 to finish in third place.

Defending champion Aaron Hickman struggled with a final round of 75 to finish in a tie for fourth place.

The North Mid-Am is open to male amateur golfers who are 25 years of age or older by the tournament start date and reside in the North Texas region with an index of 8.4 or less.

The format for the event is 54 hole individual stroke play with no cut. Caleb and Scott earned exemptions into the 2012 Texas Amateur to be held June 14-17 at Lakewood Country Club in Dallas. The top three finishers will also receive an exemption into the 2012 Texas Mid-Amateur, scheduled from September 20-23 on the Blue Course at Dallas Athletic Club.
