Katy's Pocknall Wins Third TGA South Mid-Am

SAN ANTONIO—David Pocknall shot a final round 65 at The Club at Sonterra’s North Course to win his third Texas Golf Association South Region Mid-Amateur Championship.

Katy's David Pocknall won his third TGA South Mid-Am.Katy's David Pocknall won his third TGA South Mid-Am.A paleontologist from Katy, Pocknall erased a five-shot deficit by 36-hole leader Randy Lance with birdies on the third, fifth and sixth holes to make the turn at 3-under 33. Pocknall’s putter stayed hot on the back nine with birdies on the 11th, 13th and 14th. With a par-saving putt on the final hole, Pocknall came capped off his career low in tournament play.

With the 54-hole total of 1-over 217 (73-79-65), Pocknall secured a six-shot victory over Mike Booker of The Woodlands.

Booker, the 2005 South Mid-Am champion, began the day one shot back at 6-over par 148. He finished the final round with a 3-over 75 and took second place alone with 7-over 223 (73-75-75).

First round leader Jeff New, also of The Woodlands, finished in third place at 8-over 224 (72-76-76). Lance, the 36-hole leader from The Woodlands, finished in a tie for fourth place with League City’s Blanton Hansen at 10-over 228.

The South Mid-Amateur is open to male amateur golfers who are 25 years of age or older by the tournament start date and reside in the South Texas region with an index of 8.4 or less. 

Pocknall and Booker earned exemptions into this year’s Texas Amateur, which will be held June 14-17 at Lakewood Country Club in Dallas. The top-three finishers also earn an exemption into the State Mid-Amateur at Dallas Athletic Club in September.
